DRIVER SHORTAGES
Stymied by a shortage of drivers and seeing strong demand for freight shipping, North America's largest for-hire carriers continue to find ways to expand and diversify their businesses. A number of longhaul truckload carriers shifted their focus to shorter lanes and beefed up driver-friendly dedicated contract carriage operations.
The top 97 for-hire carriers (Canadian-based trucking companies earning $25
million or more annually) generated operating revenue of $2.6 billion
and operating expenses of $2.4 billion in the first quarter of 2008.
